The 1st XI Girls soccer team played St Kentigern’s College 1st XI yesterday afternoon. With the wet weather and very sodden field it was always going to be a difficult game for both sides.
However, the Waiheke team quickly adapted to the conditions and dominated both possession and territory in the first half, but could not covert this into goals. The impact of Christian Harris off the bench late in the first half almost paid off straight away, with her first shot scrapping over the crossbar. She was again in the action shortly after chasing down a well directed long ball from Daisy Norton in which Sabrina finished off by putting it passed the keeper and into the back of the net. Waiheke went into half time 1 -0 ahead. The second half was mirror of the first half as Waiheke again looked the superior team, however as the weather conditions deteriorated they could not extend their lead - Waiheke running out well deserved winners 1-0. The defence was again solid at the back with Daisy playing her best game of the season delivering a number of great long balls forward to the strikers, the mid-field again worked hard with Danika and Kiah running strongly for the entire game and Amelia making some accurate and strong passes.
Goal scorer: Sabrina Hemara
Players of the day – Kiah Mummery and Daisy Norton
The 1st XI will be playing away next week against the current champions - Onehunga High School. The team will need to continue their good work across the field, however they will need to start creating more scoring opportunities if they are too improve on their 2 wins and 1 loss record so far this season.
