Subjects Available To International Students

English Language Programme

All International Students are assessed on arrival at Waiheke High School and their language level ascertained. Senior mainstream classes require an English language level equivalent to Intermediate English. English classes prepare students for a mainstream environment as well as providing an orientation programme.

ESOL
English for Speakers of Other Languages is available at all year levels.

Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 follow a course in NCEA Unit Standards . Year 7-10 students follow an individual programme worked into their timetable.

Year 9
All students study:--

English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education/Health, The Arts, Technology, and learn a second language

The Arts include studies in Art, Music and Drama, and

Technology studies involve the use of Wood, Metal, Food and Fabric Technology and Information Technology

Year 10
In Year 10 students continue their studies in the seven essential learning areas as in Year 9 but have some choice in the areas of Languages and The Arts. Examples of option choices include: Art, Business Studies, Drama, Graphics, German, Maori and Music.

Senior Studies Guide

Detailed information on all senior courses (Year 11-13) is available in the Senior Studies Guide. Copies can be obtained from the school office or the Director of International Students.

Year 11
Year 11 students study for NCEA,(National Certificate in Educational Achievement). Students choose six subjects from the following list, subject to numbers and staffing.

English, ESOL, Mathematics, Art, Drama, Geography, Graphics, History, Maori, Horticulture, Physical Education, Recreational PE, Science, Computers, Media Studies, Food, Design Technology (Fabric),

Year 12
It is recommended that all students take five subjects - but individual students' needs will be considered.

Students will choose from the following courses, subject to numbers and staffing:-

English, ESOL, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Design Fabric, Drama, Photography, Geography, Graphics, History, Physical Education, Recreational P.E., Computers, Hospitality Studies, Sea Sports, Travel and Tourism, Auto Engineering, Art- Painting.

Combined Schools Exams

An opportunity is offered for our top school students to sit the Combined Schools Exams in which they will be competing with top students throughout New Zealand.

Year 13
Year 13 students study for NCEA Level 3, which allows entry into most University course. Students choose from the following courses, subject to staffing and numbers:-

Biology, Chemistry, Computers, English, ESOL, Geography, Graphics, History, Drama, Art Design, Art-Photography, Maths with Calculus, Maths with Statistics, Art-Painting, Art History, Physics, Physical Education, Sea Sports, Auto Engineering.

All individual courses are based on the individual students educational background and relevant in school assessments.

Individual courses are set in consultation with the Dean, the student and individual teachers.

DATES AND FEES 2010

Tuition: N.Z.$12,000.00 (inc. G.S.T.) for a full academic year

$3,500.00 per term if less than a full academic year

$500.00 Administration fee

Homestay: $235.00 per week ($220.00 homestay and $15.00 homestay support fee)

Optional:

Visa Application: $200.00 (plus NZIS application fee)

Airport Pick up: $140.00

Sea Sports Academy: $2,000.00 full year or $600 per term (available to years 12 and 13 only, entry criteria apply)

Included in the full year's Tuition Fees are:-

  • All tuition fees
  • Text books
  • Student Identity (I.D.) card
  • Extra activities programme in Term 4

Not included in the fees are:-

  • stationery for use in school, including a calculator
  • school uniform, which is required for Years 7-12
  • examination fees for external certificates
  • camp/field trip fees
  • materials for Photography and Technology (Soft Materials) 
  • subjects studied by correspondence if desired
  • Insurance- medical and travel insurance is compulsory for all students. We can book insurance for you at an approximate cost of NZ$600 for 12 months cover.

CALENDAR 2010

The school year is divided into four terms:-

Term One 2010: Starts Tuesday 02 February and ends Thursday 1 April

Term Two 2010: Starts Monday 19 April and ends Friday 2 July

Term Three 2010: Starts Monday 19 July and ends Friday 24 September

Term Four 2010: Starts Monday 11 October and ends Wednesday 14 December
