Education Outside The Classroom
(EOTC)

Waka Ama, February 2025

Students are offered many curricular and extracurricular trips, both on island and off island. Low risk, on-island events are covered by the blanket consent which can be submitted via the form on our School App.

Off island, high-risk trips involving financial payment require caregiver consent. School Apps is used to send out trip information and alerts, and collect specific consent.

Rachel Salisbury is the EOTC Coordinator and Rebecca Cunningham-Rose is the Senior Lead Team Manager that oversees the process.

These are the four camps we run each year, for years 7-10:

The WHS approach shifts the thinking that outdoor education is a set of activities to outdoor education as a way to view relationships, both with people and places. Kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga are the principles that we guide ourselves by and should be closely aligned with how we organise education outside the classroom.

A move away from the focus on physical ability will allow cross-curricular links that will raise student attainment across all subjects. Students will ask themselves questions such as:

  • What connection do I have with this place?
  • What is the cultural and historical significance of this place?
  • How can I advocate for, and be a guardian of this place?
  • How is my identity defined by the place I call home?

These are the questions our ākonga will think about with a place-responsive approach to Outdoor Education.
