The Building Academy
Our Building Academy is bringing students, local tradies, and supporters together to create something that’s not just a building project but something the whole community can be proud of.
Our BCATs Academy (Building, Construction and Allied Trades) is all about students learning by doing, supporting one another, and taking pride in their work. It’s a hands-on programme for Years 11-13 where students are working together to build a two-room vineyard facility with laundry and bathroom – right here at school. Upon completion, the build will be transported to Postage Stamp Vineyard.
The academy has been created to meet a real need on the island. We all know how hard it can be to find skilled builders locally, and how busy our tradies are. At the same time, getting off-island for training isn’t always realistic for our students. This programme brings those opportunities here, helping grow the next generation of local builders and tradespeople.
From Plans to Progress
The idea for the academy became a reality when the team from Leisurecom agreed to back us. They have guided the build, providing the plans, materials and the benefit of their experience. Placemakers have been on board from the start, providing support, tools and materials at the right price. Te Huruhi Primary School backed the project by providing the land for the site. Quentin Dagger stepped in, offering his time to handle the building consent process. Dave O’Brien completed the team by agreeing to teach the students. The calm, supportive way he works with young people has already made a real difference.
With the site set up and secured, things started to feel very real. Alongside the school lesson times, we have occasional weekend build days. The first of these took place on Saturday, the 11th April, which lined up nicely with the school’s 40th Anniversary celebrations.
Rodney Pope from Waiheke Home Builders led the day, working alongside students as they got stuck into building the subfloor. It was awesome to see everyone pitching in, learning as they went, and making solid progress in just one day. There was plenty of pride in the work being done. Rodney now supports Dave, teaching the students during the week. Without the generous donation of their time, the academy would not be possible.
Real Skills, Real Experience
Students take part in the academy as one of their subjects during the week, with longer practical sessions so they can really get into the work. There are also a few full build days across the year to keep things moving.
The licensed builders are supported by Ken Rhodes, our multi-talented technician, and our Academy Lead, Tanique Deacon, who is passionate about connecting students with industry for career exploration.
Along the way, students are gaining credits towards NCEA, learning how to read plans, use tools safely, and communicate on site. They’re also picking up valuable extras like Site Safe certification, working towards their driver’s licence, and even having the option to gain forklift or scaffolding licences. For those keen to explore further, there are holiday courses in areas such as plumbing, gasfitting, and electrical.
Backed by Our Community
This project is a result of what Waiheke does best – getting in behind something and making it happen. More than 30 local businesses, organisations, and trusts have contributed so far, and we’re incredibly grateful for that support. It’s a real community effort, and our students feel that encouragement and privilege each time they work on site.
Looking Ahead
By the time this build is finished, our students won’t just walk away with credits – they’ll have helped create something tangible, right here on the island. They’ll have skills, confidence, and connections with local employers, putting them in a great position to step into apprenticeships or further training.
We’re looking forward to seeing it all come together and look forward to sharing more as the build progresses.
